Running: the New 'it' Sport
Another sport becoming the newest fitness trend in the Philippines is running. Professional runners and beginners alike flock marathons and run for a cause events in recent years as a way to keep a healthy and proactive lifestyle.
Races and distances of every marathon may vary—from a mere 3-kilometer to a gruesome 42-kilometer run in some international marathons. Because it's the most inexpensive and easiest sport to get into, there's no wonder it is gaining popularity among Filipino masses. An aspiring runner just needs a place to run and, of course, a good pair of running shoes.
Just like in any other sport, there is a risk for injury in running like sprains or leg cramps. However, there are tremendous benefits one can get from it like weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, increased bone density, and even a healthier psychological being.
If a beginner wishes to join a marathon in the near future, the only thing he needs to do is practice, practice, and practice.
On the other hand, if he wants to start running as a form of exercise, here are five steps to get him right on track:
1. Prepare the things needed for running—a pair of rubber shoes, comfortable shorts and a shirt.
2. Start warming up by stretching and jumping. This will prevent possible cramps and muscle pains.
3. Find a nice place to start running. A park, a safe road, or a track oval in your area are just some places ideal to run around. If there isn't any, go to a gym and use a treadmill. Start with a brisk walk, run slowly and just have fun. Start for just 10 to 15 minutes and increase the time as the day passes.
4. Set a goal and keep oneself motivated. This should be achievable like running for half an hour without stopping or joining a three-kilometer run. One should be committed and driven to accomplish his goal to keep going.
5. Learn the other aspects of running. Research more to improve and avoid injuries and other technicalities. Find the qualities of a good pair of running shoes and a better technique to run longer.
